Yet, through all of it Schlapp remains focused on the mission at hand, working closely with the White House's policy and legislative affairs teams and policy shops as as the broader communications operation in order to oversee policy implementations. The first few months, Schlapp has concentrated on school safety problems, addiction, infrastructure and international trade. Her interactions with journalists aren't often in her current role. Mercedes Schlapp's job in the role of White House Strategic Communications Advisor is not an easy one. She must contend with a president who serves as his own communication director as well as numerous legal fights which could disrupt the White House's strategy for messaging as well as a host of Cabinet secretaries who are caught in controversies of their own. But through it all Schlapp remains focussed on the task in hand and has worked closely with the White House's political affairs as well as legislative affairs and policy shops as with the larger communications team for policy-related rollouts. The main areas of her concern has been around issues such as security at schools, trade, as well as opioids. Schlapp hasn't dealt with reporters frequently in her current job. It was in March that she received a flurry of media attention when it became widely known that Schlapp was the next candidate to take over Hope Hicks's job as director of communications. The fight has been ugly. The Schlapp's allies as well as Tony Sayegh have begun to fight in the media. Following the Washington Examiner published a negative report on Sayegh Schlapp said she called Sayegh to show a heart to heart.
